Discover the treasures of the French Basque coastline aboard Woody, our 1970s VW combi. This 4-hour immersive road trip invites you to explore the culture, landscapes, and traditions that shape the Basque Coast. Starting from Biarritz Lighthouse, we will follow the scenic coastal road south to Bidart, where you’ll taste the authentic Basque cake in a charming old watermill. We will continue to Guéthary, a picturesque village once known for whale hunting, to enjoy its timeless fishing atmosphere before reaching Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the “pirates’ city,” famous for its royal wedding and colorful harbor. Throughout the tour, Clémence, your private local guide, will share stories, legends, and insights about the Basque people and their heritage. A private journey blending ocean views, local flavors, and authentic encounters — the Basque Coast as you’ve never seen it before.

BIARRITZ, FROM THE IMPERIAL CITY TO THE SURFER PARADISE

The tour starts in Biarritz, famous imperial city also known for its surf spirit! Driving thought the beautiful streets made up of sumptuous palaces and villas, you will explore the past of this ancient harbor that became the summer holiday destination of the European aristocracy in the middle of the 19th century. Step back in the 50’s at the “Côte des Basques” beach, where the first waves were surfed in Europe!

ENJOY THE TRADITIONAL FLAVORS OF THE BASQUE CAKE

You will then be invited to taste the traditional flavors of the Basque cake in an ancient mill in Bidart. Your guide will tell you the story of this ancient cake, made of pastry cream or … cherries!

GUETHARY, THE BASQUE AUTHENTIC FISHERMAN VILLAGE

Heading south along the beautiful coastal sceneries, the tour takes you the tiny and authentic village of Guéthary, famous for whales hunting in the 14th century. Learn about the whaling past, its stories and activities. Walk down the small dry-deck harbor that hasn’t change for ages, to feel the spirit of the Basque fishing culture.

CHASING WHALES AND CORSAIRS IN SAINT JEAN DE LUZ

A few kilometers further, explore the rebellious city of Saint Jean de Luz, known for its Pirates’ stories. Did you know that Louis XIV, “Le Roi Soleil” was get married in this authentic harbor? Enjoy a free time in the city (30mn)

THE BASQUE CORNICHE, A PRESERVED NATURAL TREASURE

Finally, before heading back to Biarritz, embark for a roadtrip along the Basque Corniche, to discover the secrets of these spectacular cliffs. You’ll be introduced to our 18m local monster that awakens once year: the Belharra wave!
